A 5-Day Challenge for Women Leaders & Founders Who Want to Stop Holding Back

From Holding Back to Taking Action:

A private podcast to help you be more courageous

Welcome to my private podcast, it's great to have you here!

All five episodes are now available, scroll down to listen or download.

This is designed to be a five-day challenge. The five podcasts work well in sequence, with ideas building across the episodes and are designed to help you stop holding back and start taking action towards your goals.

Rather than simply talking through psychological ideas, techniques and tools, I wanted to create this podcast as a gentle conversation with you.

In each episode, I draw on my 20+ year career as a clinical psychologist, studying, researching and applying psychological theories of why we develop unhelpful patterns in our lives. You'll discover the most important psychological insights and tools that I believe will help you move forwards. I've also included a number of reflective questions for you to consider and a few stories from my own experience.

I’d like to invite you to listen when you have time to pause and think and discover the wisdom within.

If any of the ideas resonate, or if you have feedback or suggestions, I’d love to hear from you, just email hello@borntobebold.co.uk.

About the Host

Hello, I’m Dr Rachel Lee and I'm a Consultant Clinical Psychologist I have an established private practice, North Star Psychology Ltd, where I help therapy clients recover from trauma and anxiety. I specialise in EMDR Therapy. Within Born to Be Bold, I coach successful, ambitious female founders and leaders who are facing new challenges, to help them be more courageous. I integrate my expertise in EMDR and a range of other therapies, plus my special interest in internal conflict, internal wisdom and nervous system regulation into my coaching sessions so that we can work more deeply that traditional coaching approaches allow.

I created this podcast as a quiet, private space to explore courage. I believe that we all have a bold part of us, but that sometimes this part gets turned down or even blocked, often as a result of our life experiences, the reactions of other people in our lives and/or the cultures we live or work in.

These episodes are shaped by what I’ve learned over the last 20 or so years as a clinical psychologist, plus my own experiences of being a senior leader and business owner. They’re offered as opportunities to slow down, pause and reflect, because I believe that the answers are often already within us.

Day 1: Spotting what's holding you back

This episode will help you to pause and reflect on the internal conflict that happens within you when you hold yourself back. The first step to overcoming our internal barriers is noticing them in a curious and compassionate way.

Day 2: Breaking unhelpful patterns

This episode will help you to break unhelpful patterns, whether you find yourself getting caught up in unwanted thoughts or negative self-stories or find yourself "polishing" your work due to perfectionism, procrastinating or avoiding the very actions that would help you reach your hopes and dreams.

In this episode I discuss the choice point, developed by Russ Harris, an expert in acceptance and commitment therapy, which is a simple model for making value-driven decisions. I've included an image of this below so that you can visualise it more easily.

Day 3: Getting clear on your next bold step

This episode will help you identify an aspirational, values-aligned goal, or what I'd call a bold goal. A goal that takes courage to achieve. A goal that creates energy within you when you imagine it.

All too often, we scale back our goals or set safe goals, in order to avoid failure or disapproval. In this episode I ask a number of reflective questions to help you develop a goal that is truly important to you. From there I guide you through identifying a first step towards this goal, so that you can start taking action.

Day 4: Taking action even when it feels uncomfortable

This episode introduces the idea of radical acceptance. Being more accepting of reality, e.g. that some people will disapprove of our work or ideas and sometimes we will make a mistake or fail, can open the door for change. When we stop struggling against reality we are free to problem solve and move forwards.

There are some experiential exercises in this episode that will help you connect with your bold self, including Dropping Anchor. I also talk about nervous system regulation and reframing performance-related anxiety into something more helpful.

Day 5: Building and sustaining momentum

This episode brings together the key ideas from the previous episodes and invites you to think about ways that you can develop momentum and sustain it over time. There's an opportunity to reflect on past challenges and to think about your uniqueness, such as playing to your strengths and how your mind works. I talk about working in seasons and encourage you to think about what sort of patterns would suits you best over the days, weeks and months.

Finally, I return to the idea of acceptance and also highlight the need for self-compassion.

I'd love to hear how you've found these podcasts and what you've taken away from them.

If you've found the ideas in these podcasts interesting, join my new, updated & free masterclass on 3 Steps to Navigate Imposter Syndrome. It's specifically for professional women. I offer a deeper dive into some of these ideas, plus share a new approach to thinking about challenges which makes it easier to take the risks and tolerate the uncertainty involved in leading your business or team.
